About PENNY JO

Best for: families or friend groups of up to six, with couples who take food seriously a close second.

PENNY JO is a 2022 Bali Catamaran based in Nassau, and her standout is the crew: Slovenian captain and chef duo Martin and Suzana, who between them bring licensed offshore experience, an engineering background, and a genuinely accomplished galley to every charter. Twenty-four guest reviews reflect a boat that runs well and a crew that people return to.

Three queen cabins, each with a private en-suite, individual air-conditioning, and a dry stall shower, sleep six guests comfortably. Multiple deck areas, including a fly-bridge with 360-degree views, a forward sun deck, and an aft cockpit, mean the group spreads out rather than crowds together. The toy list covers most of what the Bahamas calls for: kayak, two paddleboards, wakeboard, towable tube, snorkel gear, fishing rods, and Hawaiian sling spears for lobster hunting. Suzana's cooking, built on culinary courses and years of hospitality experience, turns evening anchorages into proper meals. Martin's freediving enthusiasm and easy manner make the water time as rewarding as the sailing.

Guest reviews

Our family recently had the vacation of a lifetime aboard Penny Jo
Charters.

From the moment we stepped onboard, Captain Martin and Chef Suzana made us feel completely at home. Martin's knowledge of the Exumas was incredible, and he took us to some of the most breathtaking locations we've ever seen. The scenery was spectacular, and every day brought a new adventure.

Suzana's meals were absolutely outstanding. Every dish was beautifully prepared, delicious, and seemed to perfectly complement our days on the water. We looked forward to every meal as much as the next destination.

What truly made this trip special was the hospitality. Martin and Suzana went above and beyond to ensure our family had an unforgettable experience. Their warmth, professionalism, and attention to detail made us feel like honored family rather than guests. Martin would share daily photos of us which were not only incredible but I so appreciated them as we tend to not take enough photos on family vacations!

The views, the food, the experiences and the memories we made will last a lifetime. We simply can't say enough about Martin and Suzana-they were fantastic in every way. If you're considering a charter in the Exumas, Penny Jo Charters is an easy five-star recommendation!

Sailing on the Penny Jo with Suzana and Martin was nothing short of extraordinary. The moment we set out on the stunning, crystal‑blue ocean, it was obvious we were in the best hands possible. The water was so beautiful it felt unreal, and they made sure we had every opportunity to enjoy it.

Suzana was incredible from start to finish. Her warmth and attentiveness made the trip feel personal, and the food she prepared was fantastic — fresh, flavorful, and far beyond what you’d ever expect on a boat. We were amazed at the wonderful meals she prepared in such a small kitchen. Every meal added something special to the day.

Martin brought the perfect balance to the experience. His sailing skills were impressive and his timing for excursions was amazing. He always had us in the perfect spot before any crowds showed up. But it was his humor that really made the trip fun. His one liners always landed at just the right time, keeping everyone smiling without ever breaking the peaceful rhythm of the ocean around us.

Together, Suzana and Martin create an atmosphere that’s relaxed, fun, and memorable. Between the breathtaking water, the amazing food, and the effortless good vibes, our time on the Penny Jo was unforgettable.

If you get the chance to sail with Suzanna and Martin take it — you won’t forget it.

The Penny Jo is a lovely vessel that provided a perfect home for our group of 3 couples (all 65+) with various levels of sailing experience.
It's well cared for and well provisioned.

Our crew, Martin and Suzana provided a perfect experience in every way. The food, the sailing, the experiences and the anchorages all exceeded our expectations. They have a joyful and unintrusive way of providing exactly what we needed when we needed it. They are a great team, and we expect to sail with them again.

Just got home from an unforgettable trip on Penny Jo for my 40th birthday celebration. I went with my husband and two other couples and had the best chef and captain taking care of us around the clock! Suzana was an amazing cook and Martin was exceptional with sharing the history of the beautiful islands and seeking out the best (practically private) islands where we got off the boat to relax on the beach and/or do excursions. We got to swim with the pigs, nurse sharks, turtles and snorkeled around various beautiful areas. Suzana and Martin made this trip so special for me and I will never forget it! We WILL see you two again.

Book the trip - you won't regret it!!

We had a fantastic time with Captain Martin and Suzana on the Penny Jo. The meals were all wonderful and so were all the sights. From feeding iguanas and pigs to swimming with nurse sharks. The water is so beautiful! Don't forget about the octopus gardens at Highborne Cay. We enjoyed playing "busted" - the dice game with you! Even though you kept the dinghy! Thank you for your Slovenian words Fried Cat! Come see us in Alabama!

Thank you!

Our sailing trip through the Bahamas, specifically the Exumas, was simply fantastic! We saw so many marine animals, but the highlight for us was definitely the sea turtles. One of the most thrilling experiences was swimming with sharks – truly unforgettable!
Onboard, we enjoyed delicious meals prepared by our friendly and attentive stewardess. The experienced captain ensured a safe and smooth journey, allowing us to fully relax and enjoy the stunning surroundings.

A huge thank you to the PennyJo team for an amazing vacation – we will definitely be back!

I had an unforgettable week aboard the Penny Jo, exploring the breathtaking Exuma Islands in the Bahamas. The private chef on board was exceptional, preparing a variety of delicious meals that delighted us each day. The ship's captain was equally impressive, sharing fascinating insights into the history of the Bahamas and ensuring we experienced the best the islands have to offer.

Some highlights of our trip included visiting Iguana Island to feed the iguanas, swimming with sharks, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, and marveling at a sunken plane resting on the ocean floor. Every moment was an adventure, and the crew's attention to detail made it even more special.

If you're looking for a luxurious, fun, and educational getaway, I couldn't recommend the Penny Jo more. This trip was truly a dream come true!

Had the best and most unique experience on Penny Jo Sailing Charters. From when we were greeted at the airport to meeting the sailing hosts, and spending everyday exploring a new island... it was an unforgettable trip. Suzanna took such great care of us and catered the food to our likings throughout the trip. She always offered drinks and made sure we had everything we needed day and night. Martin was a great adventure guide always kept the days entertaining. He was very knowledgeable about the boat and the islands so we were always in good care and felt safe. I would recommend this charter to anyone and will be returning in the future!

Our trip to The Exumas Bahamas was definitely one for the books! It's hard to describe through words and pictures how beautiful and amazing this trip has been!
Pictures just don't do it justice... you truly have to witness it in person to appreciate it.

We had the privilege of sailing Penny Jo Sailing Charters with the most incredible staff and company. Martin and Suzana were an amazing crew and very professional with top notch hospitality. Martin, our captain was very knowledgeable and always put safety first, and Suzana's meals were absolutely delicious! Each day was better than the last, and the water was the most beautiful I have ever seen along with the islands and beaches. Penny Jo provides the best of both fun and relaxation...sunrises and sunsets from the bow to paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, and more.

We loved our week on Penny Jo! Amazing boat with great accommodations. The captain, Martin, and chef, Suzane are knowledgeable, experienced, friendly and great to be around. Their confidence and skills put us and the other passengers at ease from the first day on board. One meal was better than the next, flavorful and healthy with a Mediterranean flare. The sights we saw were like nothing we have ever seen - crystal clear water with varying shades of blue and beautiful islands and beaches. The itinerary was perfect - land and sea parks with beautiful waterways, quiet, pristine beaches, snorkeling with abundant fish and turtles, kayak and paddle board spots and at the end of the day, happy hour on the Sun Chill tied to the boat.
Five star vacation!

Amazing TripJune 2026

The crew (Martin and Suzana) were exceptional. All facets of the boat, sailing, moorings, beaches, snorkeling, hikes, dining, baking, cocktails, amenities, education, history, etc., were handled thoroughly, professionally, and with warmth and kindness. Can’t say enough good things about the two of them. The rest of my family feels exactly the same way.

Suzana is a very good chef. Loved her variety and willingness to cater to our tastes. She also makes killer cocktails!

This was the trip of a lifetime. The boat fit the four of us comfortably. The Penny Jo is in excellent condition, and Martin was constantly improving and servicing the vessel to keep it in top form. I love to see that standard of care. It was nice to have A/C in the staterooms. It gets warm in those cabins without it. I also really appreciate the pivoting back wall on the Bali. It’s really nice to have the whole cabin opened up. There was a good amount of shade. Never underestimate the importance of getting out of the sun.

Highlights on our touring included the Bath, The Cave, hikes across islands to totally remote beaches, swimming with sharks, snorkeling a large number of reefs, multiple crashed planes, turtles, Martin’s drone (he’s an amazing drone photographer), the aquarium, catching a dorado and barracuda, every shade of blue water possible, and sailing instructions.

I covered much of this in the earlier section. The yacht was in great shape. No issues. It’s only a 44 ft boat, so we expected smaller cabins. I’m 6’4” and my son is 6’6”. Having queen beds was great. We only went to the cabins to sleep, so they were fine. Really glad for the A/C. Suzana kept the cockpit in great shape despite us leaving towels and clothes laying around. She constantly kept the kitchen clean. We all agreed that 6 guests on this boat would have been a little cramped. Our group of 4 was perfect.

We used the Sun Chill daily. It’s not comfortable for more than two people. Everyone slides to the middle. The kids liked it, I did not. Some used the paddleboards and had fun. We snorkeled several times a day. It was our primary recreation. Absolutely loved the water, reefs, sea life, corals. There are some good currents in places, but Martin watched us like a hawk and made sure we were safe and picked up. We’re experienced, so currents weren’t an issue. I’ve got about 500 pictures from the underwater GoPro Martin loaned us for every swim.

Suzana is a very good chef. Always three courses at dinner with great variety, we love seafood and she prepared great salmon, grouper, tuna, and lobster. Didn’t know Martin was a baker. Excellent sourdough bread, wheat bread, and from-scratch thin crust pizza! Great strong coffee in the morning. They followed preferences perfectly. We asked to try items from their native Slovenia, and Suzana made several dishes for us. They were family recipes and we loved them. Always more than enough food, snacks, mimosas, cocktails, cold beer, and very good wines.

Martin and Suzana were fantastic. We love them both and would love to sail with them again someday. Helpful, kind, considerate, and friendly. Martin and Suzana really know sailing and hospitality. We became friends on our trip.

Could have stayed for another week! The pace was exactly what we wanted it to be. Martin and Suzana were well tuned into our desires. Having never been in the Exumas, we trusted them to help manage the pace and events. We couldn’t be happier with how it worked out. Never bored or hurried.

We loved our trip!

Good to know

We want to make sure you are well prepared and informed for your trip. Here are a few things you might want to know before you set off.
An APA (Advanced Provisioning Allowance) is an amount paid to the yacht before your charter. It's a fund to cover expenses such as food & drink eaten on board, fuel and mooring fees. At the end of your charter, you’ll receive a detailed document showing how the APA was spent, and any remaining balance will be refunded to you. if in doubt about what is included, ask your HELM broker.
The Captain will let you know if you're about to overspend and discuss your next steps, which wil generally be a bank transfer to top up the funds.
We recommend (10-15% for the Med) (15-20% for the Caribbean/Bahamas) of your charter fee, which will be split evenly among the crew (it's a nice touch to bring a blank envelope or a thank you card in advance).
We'll share your Captain's details with you a few weeks before your charter. We can set up a group chat with your group and the captain to discuss plans before you go.
